Chitwan National Park is one of the few places where you can track wild rhinos and tigers on foot. Because this exposes you directly to wild animals, the park enforces strict safety rules. Knowing these protocols helps ensure a secure trip into the jungle.

Is it safe to do a walking safari in a tiger and rhino reserve?

Yes, it is generally safe if you follow the rules and travel with trained experts.

You cannot walk in Chitwan National Park alone. The park mandates that every walking group has at least two licensed jungle guides. One guide typically walks in front, while the other stays at the back. These experts know how to read animal behavior and avoid dangerous encounters.

What do I wear to stay safe?

You must wear neutral clothing that blends into the jungle environment.

Bright colors like white, red, or neon are not allowed. These colors can agitate animals or draw unwanted attention. Stick to khaki, olive, brown, or grey. You also need long-sleeved shirts and trousers to protect against mosquitoes and scratches.

How should I behave near wildlife?

Maintain a safe distance and stay completely quiet.

If you encounter a rhino, tiger, or sloth bear, listen to your guides immediately. Never feed, tease, or try to approach the animals. Sudden movements or noise can trigger defensive reactions from wildlife.

Do I need special gear for a walking safari?

You need practical footwear and protection against insects.

Wear comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes or lightweight hiking boots. You will walk through dense forests and tall elephant grass. Apply strong insect repellent with DEET or Picaridin for mosquitoes and leeches. Carry a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated during your trek.

Being inside the park at night on foot is strictly prohibited. Most walking tours start early in the morning when wildlife is active. You must always carry a valid park entry permit on your person while inside the boundaries.
